Ellen Sanchez Alonzo Hunt was born on July 8, 1928 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Manuel and Perfecta Sanchez Alonzo. Known to family and friends as Elena or Mamacita, she resided at 748 Grayson Drive, Springfield, and formerly at 214 William Street.
She passed peacefully surrounded by family. She is survived by her son John, daughter-in-law Palma Puzzuoli, and granddaughter Thanya of Cotuit, Massachusetts along with a brother Roy Alonzo of Exeter, New Hampshire and her nieces Adrene Adams and Barbara Bodziak and nephews Greg, Jeff, and Tony Alonzo. She was pre-deceased by her brothers Fred, Felix, Manny Alonzo and her sisters Mary Teater and Carmen Stacy along with her nephew Wayne Simmons.
Elena resided in Springfield for almost 90 years and was a loving daughter, mother, sister, aunt, wife and grandmother. She spent the last 6 years living with her son and daughter-in-law in Cotuit, MA.
Growing up in Springfield she was a graduate of the High School of Commerce and Gaugh School of Business. She was employed at Parmenter Auto Parts, Lincoln and John Hancock Insurance Companies before retiring from the State as an aide to the former Representative and Speaker of the House, Anthony Scibelli.
She loved her city, her neighbors, her church and her many friends and family. Those who knew her will remember her cheerful nature and how she enjoyed entertaining, hosting summer picnics, holiday gatherings and especially how she adored Christmas.
Mamacita was always elegantly dressed, loved to dance and to travel. She went on many adventures with her sister Mary and niece Adrene. Her travels took her all over the globe from North America, Europe, Russia, Scandinavia, Asia, New Zealand, Australia and back.
She lived a full and joyful life and had a strong faith. Whenever you saw her, she would greet you with a big smile and kind words.
Calling hours are Monday (Oct. 2, 2023) from 9:00AM-11:00 AM at the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 220 North Main St., East Longmeadow. Funeral services begin at the funeral home at 11:00AM. Procession to follow for a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12:00 NOON at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 417 Boston Road, Springfield with the burial following at Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay Street, Springfield, MA.
