May 29, 1954 ~ January 1, 2019 (age 64) 64 Years Old

Obituary

On January 1, 2019, Alwynne Robert Mentos passed away peacefully while surrounded by the love of his wife and two surviving sons after a long struggle with health complications stemming from diabetes. Mentos was born on May 29, 1954 in St. Kitts.
From The Alley, Sandy Point, St. Kitts, Alwynne “Corner” Mentos grew up in a large family that felt even larger due to a tight knit community and close friends that felt like brothers and sisters. A born entertainer, Mentos thrived in music and sports from a young age. In his younger years Mentos gained the nickname “Corner” serving as a double entendre for how he could always be found on the same corner playing his steel pan and for his unique ability to score goals directly off of corner kicks during football (soccer) matches. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1970 Mentos continued his journey with music by gracing stages weekly throughout New England and the New York Tri-State area as a well known Calypso, Soca and Reggae artist.
Mentos is survived by his wife, Carol (nee Woishnis) Mentos, sons, Aaron Mentos, Ian Woishnis, and predeceased by son, Elijah Mentos, mother, Lillian (nee Paul) Mentos, and father Robert Mentos. He also leaves sisters, Evadne and Julie, and brother, Vincent, Nephews: Charles, Robert, Leroy, Steve, Elvis, Norman, Dannyo, Jason, Junior, Daniel and Joseph, Nieces: Roberta, Sandra, Sonya, Selina, Denise and Giselle and is predeceased by brothers Charles, Norman, Cecille and Morris Mentos.
A funeral service will be held for Mentos on February 15th at 2:00 PM at St. Stanislaus Cemetery located at 800 Montgomery Street. Chicopee, MA. A “Celebration of Life” will be held on February 16th at 2:00 PM at the VFW Post 8006 located at 18 Meadow Street in Florence, MA. This event will be his “last gig” featuring music, dancing and potluck style food. For more information see Facebook event titled “Mentos and The New Horizon Memorial and Tribute Concert” created by Aaron Mentos. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made towards “The Mentos Foundation”, a foundation started by Corner and his son, Aaron, as a way to give back to the island through music, sports and education. Contributions can be made out to Aaron Mentos at 783 SouthEast Street Amherst, MA 01002.
