Michele Massa

Michele Massa, 85, of Springfield, beloved husband of Giovannina (Recchia), passed away peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Baystate Medical Center. Born in San Marco, Italy on January 3, 1933, he was the son of the late Giovanni and Giuseppina (Iannantuni) Massa. Michele grew up in Italy and served in the Italian Army where he ran the motor pool and was a driving instructor. He married Nina in 1959. He moved to the US in February of 1962, settling in Springfield. Michele worked for American Saw for 28 years before retiring. He loved cars and trucks, especially Buicks and Cadillacs. He enjoyed walking in Forest Park and had a love for birds. Michele played the accordion and harmonica and enjoyed listening to Italian music. Above all of his interests and hobbies, he was devoted to his family and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Besides his beloved wife of 59 years, Nina, he leaves 4 sons, John Massa and his wife Lorrijane of Wilbraham, Nick Massa and his wife Lori of Longmeadow, Walter Massa and his wife Megan of Somers, CT, and Bruno Massa and his wife Sheila of Springfield; 5 grandsons, Michael, Nicholas, Alexander, Andrew, and Joseph Massa; 2 sisters, Rosa Galoppo of Italy, and Nina Pozzuto and her husband Saverio of Longmeadow; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Giuseppe Massa and his wife Evelyn.
His family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 24th from 4-7 PM at Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main St., East Longmeadow. His Funeral will begin on Thursday, January 25th at 8:45 AM from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at Holy Cross Church, Springfield. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Springfield.
